A concrete new milestone for mosaHYc: the cross-border hydrogen transport network, driven by NaTran in France and by operator CREOS Deutschland Wasserstoff in Germany, has achieved a major breakthrough. French producer Verso Energy and German steel group SHS have signed an agreement for the supply of at least 6,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year, starting in 2029. This is a key step towards the decarbonisation of European industry, made possible by NaTran's commitment.

The French company Verso Energy and the German steel group SHS (Stahl-Holding-Saar) announced on Friday, September 5, the signing of a contract for the supply of at least 6,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year over a ten-year period, starting in 2029. Under the agreement, Verso Energy will begin supplying SHS at the end of 2029 with hydrogen certified as “renewable fuels of non-biological origin” (RFNBO), guaranteeing that the hydrogen has been produced from renewable electricity.

This agreement is part of the German group’s decarbonization strategy, known as “Power4Steel”, which aims to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 55% by the early 2030s through the production of low-carbon steel.

In France, Verso Energy will build its hydrogen production plant in Carling (Moselle), scheduled to come into operation in 2029. Starting with 70 megawatts (MW), its annual capacity could reach 300 MW over time, equivalent to around 50,000 tons of hydrogen.

This renewable hydrogen will be delivered to the ROGESA steel site, a subsidiary of SHS, in Dillingen, via the future mosaHYc hydrogen transport network, developed by NaTran in France and by gas network operator CREOS Deutschland Wasserstoff in Germany.

Consisting of converted natural gas pipelines and new pipelines, mosaHYc will be the first open, shared cross-border hydrogen transport infrastructure between France and Germany. It is expected to expand to connect other hydrogen producers and consumers in a transparent and non-discriminatory manner on both sides of the border.

This pioneering network in the construction of the European internal hydrogen market was designated a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Commission in 2023. In April 2024, NaTran and Creos Deutschland Wasserstoff GmbH, the hydrogen subsidiary of CREOS Deutschland, announced an investment decision of €110 million for its construction. Commissioning of mosaHYc is currently scheduled for 2029.
