Project description

MidHY is a project to build a hydrogen transport pipeline between the future HySoW network being developed by Teréga near Cruzy and the HY-FEN hydrogen backbone project led by NaTran.

The aim of the project is to provide a secure hydrogen connection between Occitanie and the future national and European network. It would link the system – developed by Teréga – to the project, which is set to become the main French focal point in the corridor towards the north and east of France, Germany and the major European consumer markets.

The MidHY project stems from discussions held as part of the European Hydrogen Backbone initiative and from the collaboration between NaTran and Teréga on the development of hydrogen infrastructure in the south of France.

MidHY is included in the European Union’s second list of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs), under the heading of European hydrogen infrastructure

Hydrogen: intended use, timetable and technical details

MiDHY will be designed to connect the HySoW network to the HY-FEN backbone, linking renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production capacity and import terminals in south-western France to the main industrial hubs served by HY-FEN and the H2med corridor. MidHY will also facilitate access to future storage and flexibility capacity, thereby contributing to the growth of a renewable, low-carbon hydrogen market across Europe.

  • 2020-2022: preliminary studies for the design of a European hydrogen transportation infrastructure as part of the ‘European Hydrogen Backbone’ initiative.
  • 2025: pre-feasibility study for the MidHY project, from the interface point with HySoW at Cruzy (34) to the corridors under consideration for HY-FEN, covering a distance of approximately 190 km.
  • September 2026 : application to the European CEF Energy Studies 2026 call for proposals.
  • 31 January 2025 : winning project in the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) call for proposals.
  • 2027-2029: basic engineering studies.
  • 2030-2031: detailed engineering design and administrative procedures.
  • From late 2032: commissioning.
  • Length: approximately 190 km.
  • Diameter: 800 mm.
  • Capacity: 67 GWh/day.
