Biomethane injection in 2024
Wednesday 11 June 2025 - Biomethane injection feedback report.

NaTran, GRDF, REGAZ-Bordeaux, R-GDS, Soregies and Teréga have jointly released the 2024 edition of the biomethane injection feedback report. This independent report aims to provide valuable insights into the injection performance of biomethane plants utilizing "agricultural" and "industrial" residues. The French biomethane sector is witnessing robust growth, with an impressive 27% increase in annual production capacity, reaching 11,6 TWh by the end of 2024. Agricultural and industrial methanisation plants continue to dominate the sector, constituting 88% of the total sites.
Key results
- In 2024, the number of sites continued to grow with the addition of 66 new agricultural and industrial sites that became operational.
- The availability rate of injection sites remained stable in regarding 2023 (99,2% vs 99,4%) and remains well above the contractual value (95 or 97%).
- Average Cmax Utilization Rate:
- The average Cmax utilization rate in 2024 stands at 93.8% overall, which reflects a very good level of injection. This performance is close to that of 2022, when gas market prices encouraged injections beyond the Cmax (94.6%). Known contributing factors to this performance include network reinforcements (reverse flow and interconnections), weather conditions, and the increasing professionalization of the sector.
- Notably, agricultural sites in operation for more than two years show very strong performance (average: 95.3%, median: 99.2%).
