Tarentaise: agreement for a shared gas project

Friday, February 6, 2026 - An investment for the future, serving today's jobs

In December 2025, NaTran, a French national gas distributor, concluded an agreement for a shared gas project with a consortium comprising Tokaï COBEX Savoie, UGI’RING, the government, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, and SAS, a joint venture owned by the Savoie Department and local authorities.
This marks a significant milestone for the Tarentaise region.
An initial consortium agreement was signed in December 2023.

Project objective

The objectives are to secure energy supplies for industrial sites, enhance competitiveness and prepare for the gradual integration of renewable gas sources, starting with biogas and subsequently hydrogen.

Security and speed through cooperation

The project entails a shared 25 km infrastructure serving multiple industrial sites.
This joint venture optimises costs, accelerates installation timelines and mitigates vulnerabilities arising from energy fluctuations.
In practical terms, industrial users will enjoy a more reliable energy supply, which is crucial for stabilising operations, facilitating investment planning and securing employment continuity.

Ready for renewable gases

Originally designed to accommodate biogas and technically compatible with hydrogen in the long term, the network presents a credible pathway towards decarbonisation.
The approach is both progressive and pragmatic: addressing today’s needs while laying the groundwork for low-carbon solutions, contingent on sustained volumes and standards.

Employment and skills at its core

By contributing to the security of production facilities, the project also safeguards local expertise and skilled employment within the region.

“This project reinforces our belief that the transition works when it is practical. By securing our energy supply and preparing for the integration of renewable gases, we boost the competitiveness of our sites and protect jobs in the heart of the valley.”

Fabrice Pannekoucke

President of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region

Practical and essential cooperation

The agreement stands as a shining example of collaborative working methods between industrial and public stakeholders, founded on shared decisions, common objectives and meticulous monitoring of operational progress.

About the shared gas project

The project involves the installation of a shared energy infrastructure engineered to meet current natural gas demands, immediately compatible with biogas, and technically adaptable to hydrogen in the long term.

  • NaTran’s investment: €15.2m €9.6m financed by the consortium including €2.1m in subsidies.
  • Commissioning scheduled for the first quarter of 2028.

The project is jointly funded by industrial and public partners committed to boosting competitiveness, advancing the energy transition and supporting regional economic development.
